Avian Leisure specializes in Birding and Wildlife tours for small groups and individuals, owned and run by Patrick and Marie-Louise Cardwell, both passionate birders and naturalists:
We run guided day trips in and around Cape Town as well as guided or self-drive overland trips from 2 days to three weeks or longer to bird and mammal rich destinations throughout South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia. Although we have standard tour options, most of our tours are tailored, private tours, designed to suit each client's unique interests, whether it be birding, wildlife, general nature or photographic.
Birding has been Patrick's passion since childhood and today he is one of South Africa's most respected bird guides with a personal Southern Africa list of over 874 birds (out of a total of about 900). He enjoys guiding most of our birding tours and his firsthand knowledge of the country is an important factor in being able to design the most memorable and successful itineraries for our clients. The other factors that make a trip with Avian Leisure a highly personal experience are a focus on hand-picked accommodation and the flexibility to accommodate our clients wishes, whether it's birds, mammals, reptiles, botany or a dedicated photographic trip.
Avian Leisure is run from our base in Simon's Town, Cape Town, above the Boulder's Coastal Park which is home to over 1000 pairs of African Penguins. Here we also operate two beautiful, self catering apartments, which have a magnificent situation overlooking False Bay. The birding starts in our indigenous garden, filled with Cape sugarbirds, Orange-breasted sunbirds and a wide variety of other Cape endemics – all directly below our Birder Friendly accommodation. An added delight is the regular night-time view of porcupines coming to the garden pond!
