Diamond Jubilee
60th Anniversary
On the 21st April 1950 an historical meeting took place - the inaugural meeting of the newly formed Eastern Province branch of the then South African Ornithological Society, which was named the Eastern Cape Wild Bird Society. The committee's first chairman was the late Cecily Niven, the daughter of Sir Percy Fitzpatrick and was the Society's Founder and patron for many years. In February 2000 the Society became BirdLife Eastern Cape. The Club has put together an exciting eight-day programme to celebrate its Diamond Anniversary for the week of 1st to 8th May 2010, with outings in and around Port Elizabeth as well as a birding ringing course (both bush and shore birds). We are pleased to say that we have three excellent speakers for our evening functions, the Executive Director of BLSA Mark Anderson, Warwick Tarboton international known for his expertise on Birds, as well as being an author of many books. Phil Hockey will present the Cecily Niven Memorial Lecture, at our Gala Dinner on 8th May, from The Percy Fitzpatrick Institute of African Ornithology.
The week will also include a pelagic trip, a photographic competition, and the raffle of a painting by Graeme Arnott of Lesser Flamingos, and many more activities for members and general public to attend.
