bird clubs in gauteng
BirdLife Sandton
BirdLife Sandton was established 22 years ago to serve residents in the Sandton area. The club was originally an "exclusive" club where new members were stringently screened before being admitted! Fortunately this is no longer the case. Our membership has consistently hovered around the 80 + mark for a number of years.
We have a club meeting with a speaker 11 months in the year and meet at Sandton Field and Study Centre. We try arrange a monthly week-end outing (Fri, Sat and Sun) and usually have a day outing per month. We are active on the conservation front financially supporting Free-Me, the Wakkerstroom Mining Appeal as well as Barn Swallow, Ground Hornbill and Cape Parrot projects. We erected a memorial hide at Wakkerstroom and are in the process of erecting two additional commemorative benches in Kruger (in honour of our Past Chairman and Ken Newman).BirdLife Sandton publishes 2 club magazines annually. Our logo is the head and neck of a Grey Heron.
Witwatersrand Bird Club
The Witwatersrand Bird Club, established in June 1947, is proudly the oldest bird club in South Africa. Our objectives are very much aligned with those of BirdLife South Africa and include the promotion of, inter alia, the enjoyment, understanding, study and conservation of indigenous wild birds of South Africa.
Club membership currently exceeds 800 members who can enjoy a wide range of activities including a very active programme of weekly outings and events, monthly evening meetings and a quarterly newsletter. The club works closely with recognised conservation projects and also supports a number of research projects.
The club has an office at the Delta Park Environmental centre in Johannesburg and is also represented in the greater Johannesburg area with satellite clubs on the East Rand, West Rand and down south in Henley-on-Klip. The Bokmakierie is our beloved emblem.
