Krugersdorp Game Reserve

The Krugersdorp Game Park is 1500ha's large and hosts 4 of the big 5, giraffe, hippo and 28 various species of game. All the roads are tarred. The main attractions are a 100ha lion enclosure and the bird aviary. The habitat is mostly grassveld, which provide the visitor the opportunity to observe many of the grassland species of Gauteng

The habitat is mainly grassveld with small dams and reedbeds at the northern-most end. Species that can be seen here include Ayres' Cisticola, Cloud Cisticola, Desert Cisticola, and Fantailed Cisticola, Rufousnaped Lark, Anteating Chat, Grassveld Pipit and Black Korhaan. Kurrichane Buttonquail and Montagu's Harrier (summer visitor) have been seen whilst Blackheaded Heron, Cattle Egret, Glossy Ibis and Sacred Ibis, Yellowbilled Duck, Whitefaced Duck, Redknobbed Coot and Egyptian Goose can be found in the many dams in the reserve. Southern Red Bishop, Whitewinged Widow, Redcollared Widow and Grassbird can be found in the reed beds.

The densely wooded valley runs through the reserve and includes a selection of bushveld birds. Approximately 200 species have been recorded. Visitors can also enjoy self-catering picnic facilities. A la Carte Restaurant and Ladies bar at Ngenyama Lodge. Spring and summer (September to February). Winter is always challenging for non-breeding bishops and widow birds. There is a good network of roads and walking is not permitted, so one has to bird from the car.

Directions

Take R24 Johannesburg. At Gillooly's Interchange take N3 Pretoria, then N1 Roodepoort (west). Take 14th Ave off ramp, turn right (west) drive under highway and right onto Hendrik Potgieter Drive. Travel approx 20Km, turn left into R28/N14 (Paardekraal Drive) for about 5Km. Turn right into Robert Broom drive for approx 9 Km. Turn right at t-junction out of Kugersdorp towards Rustenburg on the R24. Watch for signposts indicating the Reserve on the right hand side Approximate travelling time from OR Tambo Int'l Airport is 1-1.5 hours, depending on traffic
