Albert Falls Nature Reserve

This reserve is particularly good for several endemics including Acacia Pied Barbet, Fiscal Flycatcher and Cape Grassbird . Other interesting species seen include Coqui Francolin, Black-winged Lapwing, Brown-backed Honeybird, Red-throated Wryneck and African Pygmy-Kingfisher (Oct-Mar). There are several extremely unusual records from this reserve including Namaqua Sandgrouse, Sooty Falcon, Black Harrier and Pennant-winged Nightjar.

Much of the birding in this reserve can be done from the comfort of your vehicle. It is not difficult to record eighty species in a day in this reserve. For best results it is recommended to visit in the early morning before it gets too hot. Birding is often good around the various picnic sites especially near good patches of bushveld.

Specials to look out for are Acacia Pied Barbet , Fiscal Flycatcher , Cape Grassbird , Coqui Francolin , Black-winged Lapwing , Brown-backed Honeybird , Red-throated Wryneck and African Pygmy-Kingfisher (Oct-Mar).

Directions

Travelling along the N3 take the Greytown offramp in Pietermaritzburg. From here on the reserve is well signposted and proceed for about 18km to the reserve entrance.

Additional Info

Albert Falls Nature Reserve is accessible by day visitors. There is a small entrance fee.

There is also safe parking and toilet facilities are available. Restaurants can be found nearby.

Habitats: Grassland Albert Falls Dam and Rich Acacia savannah.
