It is not necessary to make prior arrangements with the land owner in order to visit this venue. Please just respect the land - no littering etc. Runaway fires are a hazard during dry periods. No braai fires in winter please.

Specials to look out for are Yellow-billed Duck, Egyptian Geese and Spur-winged Geese. This is an excellent spot for South African Shelduck, White-faced Duck, African Black Duck, Cape Teal , Hottentot Teal, Red-billed Teal, Cape Shoveller and Southern Pochard. Other birds that may be detected at the water's edge include, Blacksmith Lapwing, Spotted Thick-knee, Little Egret, Grey Heron and African Snipe. In the adjacent grasslands birds like African Marsh-Harrier, Red-winged Francolin, Long-tailed Widow, Rufous-naped Lark, Cape Longclaw, Wing-snapping Cisticola, Zitting Cisticola and Wailing Cisticola may be found.

Directions

Take the N2 from port Shepstone to Harding. From the junction at the turn off to the village of Harding, continue along the N2 for about 1.2 km, then turn left onto the road sign posted to Umzimkulu. Follow this road for another 1.1 km and turn off to the right just before the bridge. You will reach the stock sales yard if you continue on this track, veer off to the left before reaching the Sales yard and follow the track to the dam wall.
